Rock Sanctuary of San Michele
This holy place, much revered in the Middle Ages, was probaly dedicated in pre-Christian times to the cult of the mysterious goddess Vacuna. Vacuna was a divinity worshipped by the ancient Sabines as protectress of crops and forests. In the early Medieval period this pagan cult was replaced by Christianity. The cave was in fact consecrated to Saint Michael the Archangel, whose cult spread in south central Italy in the Longobard period.
